On August 27, the Taiwan Foreign Correspondents’ Club will be hosting renowned China expert Willy Lam for a talk entitled “Riding the Tiger: Xi Jinping and the Perils of Absolute Power”. The discussion will explore the risks and challenges currently facing President Xi Jinping and will be moderated by TFCC vice chair David Demes.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Willy Lam is a Senior Fellow at the Jamestown Foundation in Washington D.C. and a Research Fellow with the Center of Asian Research at the University of Victoria, Canada. He previously taught Chinese politics, history, and foreign affairs at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2007–2022) and was China Editor at the South China Morning Post in the 1990s. An accredited foreign correspondent in Beijing from 1986 to 1989, Dr. Lam has authored ten books on Chinese elite politics, including two on Xi Jinping. His latest, From Confucius to Xi Jinping: The DNA of Chinese Politics, was published by Routledge in July 2025. He is currently working on his third book on Xi Jinping, expected in 2026.
