As part of our monthly TFCCxATJ event series, the Association of Taiwan Journalists has invited Dr. George Nee (倪世傑), Adjunct Assistant Professor at National Chengchi University’s Graduate Institute of East Asian Studies, to discuss China’s new “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress” and its implications for Beijing’s policies toward ethnic minorities.

The new law, which came into effect on July 1, 2026, represents an important development in Beijing’s approach to ethnic governance. Beyond reinforcing existing policies, the legislation raises broader questions about national identity, cultural assimilation, and the future of ethnic minority communities in China.

Drawing on the historical evolution of China’s ethnic policies, Dr. Ni will examine the political motivations behind the new law and explore what its implementation could mean for the cultural identities, languages, and rights of ethnic minorities.
