The professional membership of the Taiwan Foreign Correspondents’ Club strongly condemns the targeted killing of journalists in Gaza, including Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Al-Sharif, by the Israeli Defense Forces. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 192 journalists have been killed since the start of the Israeli-Gaza war in October 2023. This unprecedented loss of media workers represents a grave blow to press freedom and the public’s right to information.

We call for immediate measures to ensure the safety of journalists in conflict zones, an end to the targeting of media personnel, and the restoration of safe, independent access for international media to the Gaza Strip.

Journalists must be able to work without fear of violence, in accordance with international humanitarian law. We also echo the statement made by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan on this matter on August 13.
