EVENT SUMMARY

Multiple government officials from countries across the world reportedly expressed grave concern about the showdown between President Lai Ching-te’s Democratic Progressive Party and the opposition coalition led by the Kuomintang (KMT), which controls the legislature and has sought to block much of Lai’s security and governing agenda. The opposition has pushed for impeachment, held up the special defense budget and 2026 general budget, clashed with the Constitutional Court and heavily criticized the tariffs deal with the U.S. The country, meanwhile, faces more and more political warfare and military threats from neighboring China. In this panel designed to kick off 2026, experts and policy insiders explore what to expect in Taiwan this year.

We’ll be joined by:

  • John Deng, veteran cabinet minister and former chief trade negotiator
  • Jasmine Lee, co-editor of US Taiwan Watch
  • Lin Chien-Chih, Research Professor at the Institutum Iurisprudentiae, Academia Sinica; Professor at the Graduate Institute of National Development, National Taiwan University
  • Lev Nachman, political scientist and Assistant Professor at the Graduate Institute of National Development, National Taiwan University

The session will be moderated by TFCC chair and Nikkei Asia correspondent Thompson Chau.
