The Taiwan Foreign Correspondents’ Club welcomes news that a defamation case against member, former Club president, and Financial Times correspondent Kathrin Hille has been dropped.
This case should never have been brought against a reporter fulfilling her role to educate and inform on matters of public interest. It serves as an example of how Taiwan’s criminal statutes regarding defamation can be used to intimidate media professionals.
We call on the Taiwan government to ensure that journalists in Taiwan can work without fear of such intimidation.
